Répondez S'il Vous Plaît

For a long time Jamaican men have gotten a really bad reputation. You know the one, the persona of the roaming stud, with ‘gal inna bundle’ never resting at any place long enough and having at least one baby mother or woman in all 14 parishes. The image is so perpetuated in many dancehall songs long before Shabba Ranks Trailer Load of Girls, Beenie Man’s Ole Dog and will be so even after Vybz Kartel Love Dem…well everything from Vybz Kartel seem to speak to the roaming cocky mentality. It seems being in a monogamous relationship for a man is often frowned on, and the man is always mocked and terms such as ‘one burner’ are mercilessly used to make such a man feel uncomfortable with his situation no matter how good it may be.

Obviously this has played havoc on the psyche of the Jamaican woman. And no matter how strong she is, all women have the need or craving at some point to be loved, provided for and the need to feel protected. There is nothing like the feeling of security in a relationship for a woman and many will go to great lengths, embarrassment and hardships to ensure that she is, “Wife roun eer.”
Hence the cut throat matie culture and crazy modeling to make sure matie know she a nuh hot like the wife.

Maybe it has come to a head because why else would so many women turn up to parties/dances in what are obviously wedding dresses. Is this an attempt to twist the arm of Mr. Death-Before-Marriage? If so why must I also be tortured for your man’s non-committal ways? Women the fashion trend of looking like bridezilla is one that needs to stop here and now. Every time I go to a big dance I have to question “Funny I don’t remember responding to an RSVP for your wedding, and did someone already get you the toaster off the gift list?”

Jamaican Folklore: How the Fish Goda-me Got a Name

It’s been too long since I told you all any stories now don’t it. Being from deep Westmoreland in a time before cell phones, Internet and cable, going to the river use to be a really big part of my life. River for me was usually Cabaritta, which is the largest river in the parish and rises near Cascade in Hanover. I remember my Gran-Uncle and brother sometimes catching this really weird fish called Goda-me/Godami/Gadami (however you spell it), which my Great-Gran would then make really sweet rundown out of. Why I say it is a strange fish is it can live out of water for several hours, even days, if kept in a cool damp place I guess its some sort of lung fish but I really only know it as Goda-me/Godami/Gadami so if you know it by any other name please drop me a line.
Ok yu chat too much Eve tell me the story now.

Once up on a time the Creator was in the process of naming all the animals in the world. As you can imagine this went on for some time and it was a very big task to come up with really good names. Eventually names like Aye-Aye and Frigate bird can give a glimpse into the Creator Sprit’s disposition. Much time passed (this was before hours were invented) and finally the Creator was done, sighed and melted in a chair due to the sheer exhaustion of the completed task. Then out of nowhere came a small almost frightened voice it said,
Gad?

So God jump up now and bawl out.
A who dat? A who leff?

This little fish walk out of the shadows, still a bit frightened and with really big Puss in Boots eyes says, Gaddami….

Jack Mandora mi nuh choose none.

A Few Good Men?

Its crazy how Jamaicans are labeled as homophobic worldwide. Usually by individuals who seek to judge before even before they know anything about what is considered acceptable behavior for a particular space. Personally I believe a lot of men are walking around and really don’t know how gay they are and subsequently there are a lot of latent lesbians in the dance. How else can one explain why women who should be straight- you know like 6 o’clock- are with men in pants tighter than female leggings, out and bad in bleached faces and pink shirts? Now if we are homophobs please explain the peacock at the biggest profile dance for the year?

Buju's Lawyer Confident

Arthur Hall,
Senior Staff Reporter

Noted United States criminal attorney, David O. Marcus, has expressed confidence that dancehall star Buju Banton will be freed of criminal charges.
"We're ready to fight this thing - the government's case has got no soul," Marcus yesterday in an obvious reference to Buju's recently released album, Rasta Got Soul.
Marcus was officially entered on Monday as the attorney on record to represent Buju in the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division.
Buju, whose correct name is Mark Myrie, and two co-defendants, Ian Thomas and James Mack, were indicted late last year by a grand jury on one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, and one count of aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime.
The three face the possibility of up to life in prison if found guilty on both counts.
But Marcus, who has appeared in several high-profile cases, remains unmoved as he rubbished the allegations against the dancehall star.
While withholding further comments, Marcus has started to prepare for the case, which should begin later this month.
The attorney has successfully defended several high-profile defendants and has a reputation in Florida as a first-rate legal mind.

Marcus led the defence team in the February 2009 acquittal of Dr Ali Shaygan, who faced 141 counts of selling pain medication to boost his income.
The attorney was also the man in charge of the defence of Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela and Miguel Rodriguez-Orejuela, the alleged founders of the infamous Cali Cartel out of Colombia.
In the meantime, the court has outlined the rules of discovery to be used in Buju's trial.
These include giving the prosecutors a maximum of 14 days before the trial to name any unindicted co-conspirator, whose statements would be used against the three accused men, and until January 11 to state if any electronic surveillance was used in the case and whether any confidential informant was used.
The US Drug Enforcement Agency has already claimed that it has Buju on tape testing a substance believed to be cocaine, and that the alleged deal to sell the cocaine was arranged by a confidential informant.

Cat Fights and Blow Jobs

It never ends really and you should find something better to do with your time than to waste it doing this. Until then here is the latest instalment of mind numbing idleness. Enjoy ^_^

Teacha Hit Me with a Ruler

Can some one please tell me why the teacher has expelled his Head Girl from out of the Gaza before the start of the new school year? After all it is not like she has disobeyed any of the Gaza commandments. For those of you not familiar with them:

no batty cauh fuck pon di gaza
no pussy cauh suck pon di gaza
no boy ball out informer.
we burn obeha swear to jah.
Gaza Commandments

Vybz Kartel

Clearly he didn’t say no cocky cauh suck pon di gaza. With that said following Hype’s performance at Sing her last as an Empire membr this statement was released by Mr. Palmer.

"Lisa Hype is no longer a part of the Portmore Empire. The members of the Empire have unanimously agreed to end our professional relationship especially in light of certain 'developments' that have come to our attention regarding her overall conduct, conduct that is not consistent with the decorum expected of a member of the Portmore Empire. She is an incredible artist and we wish for her all the best in her future endeavors, but Lisa Hype will not play a future role in the Empire as she no longer fits in with our organizational goals as we move forward in 2010."
Adidja "Vybz Kartel" Palmer

Wonder what poor Miss Felicia Gooden is going to do about all the Gaza ink she acquired in her short stay in the Empire. Maybe a benefit concert for her laser surgery? Not long after she released the following statement:
“I've just been released from my contract with the Portmore Empire but even though I am no longer the first lady of the Gaza, mi still ah say Gaza. Death before dishonour.
Mi nuh haffi be a part of the Empire fi still say Gaza. Gaza means fight for what you believe in and never give up...never say die. In every setback, there is an opportunity fi grow and right now, mi not going to stop, ah persistence mi say...all mi name change, my new name is Lisa HYPER. As a solo artist, mi can explore new directions, new challenges, and new freedoms, mi ah go mek it. I want to thank everyone at Portmore Empire for the love and support they’ve shown me and to the Teacha especially who enlightened me to nuff tings inna the world. Mi love everybody same way, nothing no change, memba say mi ah the first lady fi put Gaza pon mi knuckles and Empire pon mi neck . Mi wish everybody the best. Gaza fi life. Gaza till death.”
Felicia "Lisa Hyper"Gooden

The ‘R’ at the end makes all the difference you know. All the best Miss Hyper.

Bounty Killer Apologize to Shaggy and Friends

Cross! Hangry! Miserable! Too bad no one told Grung Gad that it wasn’t still Sting 09 but the nice little uptown Shaggy and Friends party (January 2, 2010,). The debacle took place when Mavado who was suppose to make a pledge invited Bounty Killa to share the stage and it all went down hill from there. Bounty who had a few choice words regarding homosexuals which it is felt caused promoters to pull the plug on the concert a head of time. However promoters denies closing the show due to the Five Star General’s tirade, sure because patrons would pay JA$30,000- $5,000 to go home early.

Bounty Killer has since released an apology:

After nearly 20 years at the top of the Jamaican music industry I have been involved in many battles - sometimes with fellow artists, sometimes with outside forces and sometimes with the state and its politicians. I've learnt to choose my battles wisely and the grounds upon which to fight them.

I've also learnt when to admit I didnt choose my ground wisely and Saturday night's Shaggy & Friends' show was one of those occasions. With so many politicians and members of the upper echelons of corporate Jamaica present, an audience I rarely get the ears of, I got caught up in the moment while expressing myself. I now realise it was inappropriate and extend my apologies to Shaggy, his sponsors, benefactors and all in attendance who were offended by my performance.

Alliance made a pledge to donate $250,000 to the cause and we will follow through on that promise and continue to support Shaggy and answer his call whenever he reaches out.

No Link Between Dancehall and Violence Among Youth

A study on violence and dancehall, led by Dr Donna Hope-Marquis, has found that there is no correlation between the two.

Funded by the Office of the Principal at the University of the West Indies (UWI), through the Special Initiatives Research Fund, the research was conducted among 300 15-24 year-olds in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine and Clarendon between June and August this year.

Hope-Marquis is a lecturer in Reggae Studies at the UWI.

For there to be a statistically significant link, there would have had to be a correlation of over 0.05 per cent between dancehall and violence. "The results were so insignificant that they could not be used as a guiding principle," Hope-Marquis.

Control and case grouping were used in the study and the persons participating were asked to respond to questionnaires which established, among other factors, their social background, music consumption and perception of music. In both cases, dancehall music was the favourite music, followed by R&B.

When asked if they believed dancehall music promoted violence, 55 per cent of the control group said yes, compared to 42 per cent of the case group. However, it is a case of the music being violent but not making them feel violent personally.

Forty-two per cent of the control group said that family members were influenced by dancehall music, and 37 per cent said friends, with the remaining percentage saying themselves. For the case group, it was 20.7 per cent family, 36.7 per cent friends, and themselves the remaining percentage.

Among the influences individual respondents identified were a desire to dress and dance like the artiste, with many respondents speaking to smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. There was also the encouragement not to give up, to take up the gun, language and hairstyle, to become an artiste, having lots of sex, to get a good education, and fighting.

One respondent said that it "opened my eyes to see how others live", while another spoke about the influence "to become a gallis".

Hope-Marquis says the study is leading in a direction of not just looking at the cultural aspects of music and documenting it for posterity, "but also to try and understand from a scientific perspective how the music impacts on the society".

She pointed out that Jamaica has had a music industry for 50 years and we need a clear understanding of how it is woven into the lives of the people and what use they make of it. While Hope-Marquis has been on various panels and been involved in discussions, they have largely been about opinions.

"I am curious, after being in the eye of the storm for about 10 years," she said.

So now, someone is in a position to say definitively, "Based on the study done in 2009, there is no statistical correlation between youth consumption of dancehall music and violence."

"This study says that to me. Full stop," Hope-Marquis said.
